I recently read an article on the Christian Science Monitor's website (http://www.csmonitor.com/Business/2012/0327/How-The-Hunger-Games-scored-a-marketing-win) about the success generated by the new film The Hunger Games. The Hunger Games is a Lion's Gate production and has been extremely popular in its opening weekend at the box office, earning over $155 million dollars in the United States alone. The film also did well internationally, generating over $59 million dollars outside of the United States, which bring the total worldwide first weekend box office sales to a staggering $214 million dollars (about the same amount as the New York Yankee's 2012 payroll). The Hunger Games had the third biggest opening weekend all time at the box office, behind only 2011's "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows part 2" and 2008's "The Dark Night". The studio did a great job of marketing this film to the appropriate target market, as the hype leading up to the films release was almost overwhelming. I don't have any interest in seeing this movie for myself, but I can respect the hard work that went to it and the marketing brilliance that lead to its extraordinary success.
